The Road That Led Me Here

In this social media era, I felt myself slowly falling into the trap of posting pictures of my beautiful kids with popular hashtags, hoping for them to be featured by well-known and reputable social media accounts.  But for what?  The short gratification of finally making it on their feed!  Or, to see how many likes it would receive and what the comments would be?  Only for people to say kind words about my children that I already know.  It’s a feeling that we hate to admit because of how shallow it makes us feel and sound as individuals, but it was, and is the sad truth.  When I was growing up, it was like seeing the camera crew from the local news station, and trying my hardest to be filmed in the background or maybe even getting interviewed and getting the chance to say “Hi Mom” on national TV.  Nowadays, I couldn’t even tell you the last time I watched the 6 or 11 o’clock news.

Let’s get back on track.  I got tired of following social media accounts from all over the globe, but particularly from the US which only featured Canadians once in a blue moon.  So I said screw this, and decided to start a new Instagram account called CANADIAN MELANIN.  I figured, there must be thousands of proud moms like myself, countless Instagram “models”, actual models, fitness fanatics with the perfect bodies, rising artists and a substantial amount of regular selfie takers that just want to be seen.  Canadian melanin would be the opportunity for us Canadians to see each other and celebrate the black beauty, love, and excellence that we possess.

The first picture I posted on January 21st 2018 was from my engagement photoshoot.  And from there, I asked a few of my friends and family members if I could share their pictures to add content to the page.  I began organically following people that I knew, didn’t know, Canadian celebrities, you name it, I followed them!  And slowly, each day the follower count grew exponentially.  At this point, upon launching our new website, we are at over 4K followers and we are just beginning.  The sky is the limit and I am thrilled to see the Canadian melanin hashtag being used and gaining popularity.

A little about me…

I’ve been married for three years and have two children, ages 7 and 2 respectively.  In my past time I love to play soccer and dance.  I was born and raised In Toronto, Ontario (Scarborough to be exact) however, for the last four years I have been living in Fort McMurray, Alberta.  Moving across the country has opened my eyes to see that there is so much beauty and diversity in cities that I didn’t even know existed when I lived in Toronto.  While making the move pulled me away from all my family and friends, it allowed my now husband and I to get engaged, have our dream wedding and begin the next chapter of our lives as adults.  I have decided to periodically write blogs about my life, McLean family goals, but in the meantime, take a look at our wedding video to get a better look and understanding of who I am!  Thanks for reading my first blog and for following and supporting CANADIAN MELANIN!
